Chapter Ten

Sophia put on her navy blue blouse. Philip’s favorite color was blue and she wanted to honor him even in a small way when they spread his ashes today. She’d been trying desperately to think of all the positive memories she had of Philip while pushing away the day of his murder and finding his body in the trunk of the car. Smoothing down her dress pants, she looked in the mirror and saw Colby right behind her. She couldn’t help it. She jumped.

“Sorry,” he said. “I didn’t mean to scare you.” He came up behind her and slid his arms around her waist. “You look beautiful.”

She turned in his arms and kissed him. “Thank you.”

“With everything going on, how are you really?” He caught her gaze, his eyes serious.

“I’m just trying to get through today,” she told him honestly. She took a step away. “If Skip can’t give us any answers by the end of today, I’m going to release a statement with John.”

“If anyone can do it, you can.” He ran his hands over her shoulders, dipping his head to look into her eyes. “I’m here for you no matter what you decide.”

She traced his jaw with her fingers. “Thank you for that.” With a quick peck on the lips, she turned and headed for the door. “We should probably get going.”

Colby followed and drew close enough to take her hand. “I did think of a solution to all this. I know you’re not sure about where you stand with your dad’s business and the gallery and things seem a little out of control right now.” He stopped in the doorway and tugged her back to face him. “You could move to Hartford and start your own jewelry design business. You’ve got the experience and the talent. Taking control with a fresh start in a new city, a city where I live I might add, could be just the beginning of a new life.”

Sophia’s stomach flipped at the thought. She wanted that. She wanted him. But there were so many other things to consider. She still had all these feelings to work through and being away from her father might not help her anxiety issues just yet. “Cole . .
